Tomorrow we can use the entire class period to discuss, work on, explore anything pertinent to the film Freeway, to the final paper, to final class work in general, and to the final moment of institutional closure---the final grade.
To get you thinking, let me quote from the final essay assignment, one of the last texts of our course, AND the syllabus, the first text of our course.
From the final assignment:
...that said, there are students who are still woefully behind, in terms of handing work in and in terms of even understanding what we’ve been doing in class. And nearly everyone could stand to take the logs more seriously---after all, completing the logs is a requirement for passing the course, at the very least.
...for those who have truly been students, this paper should be seen as a challenging opportunity to present a polished example of what you’ve gained over the semester. For those who have been occupying seats in the classroom, this paper is a last chance to try to turn something in.
And from the syllabus:
...the log functions as a space where students can begin to critically reflect on their practices as “film fan,” “movie goer” “spectator,” and “reader.” The log provides a place for students to react to and reflect on the films screened that week, that week’s class discussion and reading, as well as remarks on the discussion and films in previous classes---in other words, the log should reflect the incremental development of the student’s ideas throughout the course. Besides being a place to begin to work on the ideas generated in specific class sessions, the log can also provide a space for students to make connections between ideas and issues beyond what can be included in individual class sessions...you must turn in a complete log in order to pass the class.

Hi prof. I missed last class, so i was wondering if i could borrow Freeway. I'm sure I will need it for the final paper.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ps-I love that painting and I cant wait to go visit the Sistine Chapel hopefully next year!
Good for you! You're the first to post here. I can certainly let you borrow Freeway. I'm not sure if I lent it out last class or not, but I do have a video copy of it as well. Would that work for you?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the semester is over already! I've never really done anything like the logs before and I ended up loving the opportunity to share my thoughts as well as read what other students thoughts were
ReplyDeleteI also coudn't make it to class last Tuesady and I have been looking for a copy of Freeway so I can wrtie about it for the blog. If you have an extra copy on Tuesday would it be ok if I borrowed it? Or do you have any suggestions of where I could find it?
Thank You!
I think freeay was a great way to end the semester! I'm sure Samantha and mirella will enjoy it :)It parallels the stroy of little red riding hood in a scandolous manner lol
ReplyDeleteI'll bring my video copy with me tomorrow...I think someone already has the DVD, but I'll bring it too, if I'm wrong.
ReplyDeleteGood for you guys posting here...I'll definitely take it into account on the day of judgment!
Hey professor I was also absent last tuesday is the movie freeway a popular movie you can find anywhere because it seems that all your copies will be lent out today. So i figured I could go look for it so i can start my final paper
ReplyDeleteHello!! im officially back in business :) I saw freeway when i was in high school i think? well it was on regular tv and i watched it, and honestly until last tuesday when you presented it in class i had no idea it was the same film. I never never never never would have made that connection (little red riding hood) back then! I love how it feels its almost enlightening...i feel like i know something the rest of the world doesnt LOL
ReplyDeleteBTW i'm sorry i did have to leave class early last week, but no worries i have seen the movie :)
See you in a few hours :)
kind of sad that we're reaching the end of the semester, I've found all of the movies to be enjoyable. i'm anxious to know what movie we will be watching next week.
ReplyDeleteIt's a surprise, but one that shouldn't be that hard to figure out since clues have been dropped for several classes now. It's not The Host, nor Let The Right One In, though I was considering both of them. Nor have I been able to pull strings and get an advance copy of Machete. I guess you'll just have to wait...
ReplyDeleteI am anxious to know what it is as well. Machete would have been an amazing way to end the class
ReplyDeleteSo The Host WAS the Korean monster movie you'd mentioned though? Let the Right one In would have been a great one to show, fantastic film. I do hope the one you pick is on that calibur.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I love the use of the river in the Host, as well as that floppy monster. And Let the Right One In is just one of the most beautiful films, ever. And so sweet! I was also thinking of recycling Last Night (I've used that end of the world film as an end of class film before), or So Close, a wonderfully entertaining Chinese action flick about assassin sisters pursued by a female cop (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300620/)
ReplyDeletehey ! i cant believe the semester is over already in only one more week but i wanted to say that i enjoy the class a lot and it has challenged me in many ways and now gives me a different view on movies. I am also very happy with ending the semester with Freeway. It def. was my favorite one of the semester following storytelling! see you next week :)
ReplyDeleteThis semester went super quick. Im glad i got a chance to experience all the films we have watched! i watched the trailer for In Bruge and i am so excited to watch it! I also thought the links to all of the pictures were really funny. See you on Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteWell, you tipped me off about commenting on this particular post so I don't feel too accomplished :( Quick question, are we in charge of literally showing you our particular log posts or are you going to check on your own?
ReplyDeleteNo, I follow everyone's logs and comment on them, sometimes quickly and sometimes at length. So I have a good idea of what's what.
ReplyDeletebtw, I think I still have your first paper? It was good, so make sure you get it back.
I hadn't heard of 'Last Night' or 'So Close' to be honest. Looking at the cast I see David Croenberg is in it, but had nothing to do with making it? That confuses me. I take it you consider them worth watching later on?
ReplyDeleteMost definitely. "Last Night" is the second to the last still over on the side (its the final scene of the film) and the still from "So Close" appears to be precisely opposite this comment (at the moment): the very determined looking asian girl.
ReplyDeleteCroenberg is a mentor--directly and indirectly--for many contemporary Canadian filmmakers. I don't mean in terms of aesthetics, I mean in terms of real material help getting funding and distribution and other support for many "younger" filmmakers. I think he even acted in some of Don McKellar's student films. But in "Last Night" he has a very low key minor role in McKellar's film. He shows up in such roles here and there among the generation of Canadian filmmakers he's befriended over the years.
sorry Im late!!! I missed last class
ReplyDeletedidnt see where it said "click here to comment" but instead got a large picture of the final wreckooning and it looks pretty cool. ok gonna write on the blog now
